AbstractAs every elementary teacher knows, an elementary classroom is a busy place. While literacy and mathematics command the majority of hours of the school day, many schools are left with an inadequate amount of time to devote to science. In an urban district, students in grades K-5 receive a mere 30 minutes a day for science and social studies. There simply are not enough hours in the school day to address all of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). One approach to ensuring all standards are addressed with fidelity is to delegate some of those standards to science learning centers. But how do teachers make judicious decisions regarding which standards can best be met through centers? How can they design centers that use the inquiry approach? What can teachers do to ensure this mode of learning meets the needs of each and every learner? One place to start is by creating classrooms that give students equal access to excellence (Tomlinson and Jarvius 2012). In this article, the authors explore how science learning centers can achieve this. (ERIC).
