AbstractThis article details the process the authors--a doctoral student at the time, and a faculty member--engaged in to change the ways the University of Iowa (UI) asks for and reports student name, gender pronouns, sex, and gender identity. The UI Inclusive Student Records Initiative raises implications for practice and research. Two focus groups--one with trans* students and one with faculty and staff who use student records within their work--were facilitated to understand the way trans* students experienced student records and their interactions with faculty and staff in lieu of inclusive policies and procedures. The authors sought to better understand the landscape of higher education institutional practices related to student records. They reached out to 13 individuals at all institutions in the Big Ten Academic Alliance to inquire if their institution had students' name of reference and gender pronouns within student records systems. They also collected secondary data from Campus Pride Trans Policy Clearinghouse on public Association of American Universities (AAU). The initiative was proposed and accepted by the university's senior administration. This article was written to document bottom-up change toward deconstructing trans* oppression in higher education. The initiative catalyzed a movement at UI to improve the climate for trans* collegians. (ERIC).
