Abstract | The aim of this article is to discuss key elements of a constructivist-based elementary mathematics methods course and the role of each component in enhancing elementary school teacher candidates' mathematical understanding, interest in, and confidence with learning and teaching mathematics while decreasing their math-related anxiety and fear. The effort to break the cycle of ineffective, fear inducing, and traditional modes of mathematical instruction that lead to math anxiety, negative attitude toward the subject, and superficial understanding of mathematical concepts must begin with effective preparation of preservice teachers that is based on NCTM recommendations and guidelines (NCTM 1991, 2007). Steeped in actual constructivist teaching and learning experiences, this elementary mathematics methods course aims to equip teacher candidates with such preparation hoping that they will ultimately implement effective planning and instruction in their future classrooms, hence, benefiting all students.
