Abstract | Propagation of sound waves is one of the fundamental concepts in physics. Some of the properties of sound propagation such as attenuation of sound intensity with increasing distance are familiar to everybody from the experiences of daily life. However, the frequency dependence of sound propagation and the effect of acoustics in confined environments are not straightforward to estimate. In this article, we propose experiments, which can be conducted in a classroom environment with commonly available devices such as smartphones and laptops to measure sound intensity level as a function of the distance between the source and the observer and frequency of the sound. Our experiments and deviations from the theoretical calculations can be used to explain basic concepts of sound propagation and acoustics to a diverse population of students. (As Provided). |
