Abstract | Integrating interdisciplinary social studies topics and social responsibility concepts into a business education class can be meaningful for student learning. The discipline of social studies includes multiple areas such as economics, history, sociology, and anthropology. Social responsibility in a business sense means that companies are concerned with the communities in which they operate beyond making a profit. Social responsibility has recently been emphasized as a way to teach students about how their actions can affect society. Microfinance is an example of social responsibility in which individuals across the world can loan money to struggling entrepreneurs in poor countries. Microfinance lends itself well with social studies since it emphasizes how people live and work in other countries. This paper describes how social responsibility and social studies can be woven into an integrated project for an introductory computer applications class. The course and projects are described and they can be customized for use in a high school or post-secondary setting. (As Provided). |
