AbstractAll educators want their classrooms to be inviting areas that support investigations. However, a common mistake is to fill learning spaces with items or objects that are set up by the teacher or are simply "for show." This type of setting, although it may create a comfortable space for students, fails to stimulate investigations and positions the learner as a consumer of information rather than a collaborative creator. "Ready, Set, FLOW!" is a class project inspired by the question, "Can we have a fish tank in the class?" asked by a few eager fifth-grade students. The students' continued excitement and commitment to have a fish tank eventually led to their transforming their classroom to include a working aquaponics system. This project became the turning point in which the students were no longer consumers of information but innovators working to design and collaborate creatively. It supports student-to-student relationships and student-to-teacher relationships, and everyone develops relationships to the living organisms in their care. (ERIC).
