Abstract | Former chancellor of the Washington, D.C., public schools, Michelle Rhee, recently spoke with journalist Lenora Chu about Chu's new book, "Little Soldiers: An American Boy, a Chinese School, and the Global Race to Achieve" (HarperCollins). Chu and her family currently live in Shanghai, where her son, Rainey, attends local schools--part of a Chinese education system that is renowned for its academic results yet notorious for some of its more-authoritarian methods. They discuss the American perspective on the Chinese education system, and other differences between the two systems which tend to be at polar extremes. They also evaluate what each country can learn from the other, and wonder if a balance can be found that combines the best aspects of both. (ERIC). |
