Abstract | Ever since their serendipitous discovery by Italian mathematicians trying to solve cubic equations in the 16th century, imaginary and complex numbers have been difficult topics to understand. Here the word complex is used to describe something consisting of a number of interconnecting parts. The different parts of a complex number are the "real" part and the "imaginary" part and both of these are denoted by a real number. The term complex is not meant to denote a level of complexity which can often be students' first impression when encountering complex numbers. This article describes how to generate, interpret, and represent complex numbers as well as real world applications of complex numbers. (ERIC). |
