Abstract | Sugarcane aphids are becoming a more prevalent pest in sorghum in the United States, especially in the south and are making their way north. There are many management practices that can be used on sugarcane aphids, the most important being scouting and maintaining populations. The most common mistake once a pest has been found is to immediately spray, which can cause problems in the future when you actually need to apply an insecticide. Producers need to be aware of their cropping situation and of those around them, as that can be helpful in managing their own crop. Whether these aphids are a newly introduced species or if they adapted on their own from some other place, they are on their way to discouraging producers from growing sorghum in certain areas of the country. Farmers, field agronomists, scouts, and sales representatives are the intended readers of this publication. Management strategies for sugarcane aphids, history of the aphids, reproduction, identification, and future preventative strategies are all discussed within this publication. (ERIC). |
