| Abstract | Meng Li Lusardi, a Chinese teacher at an independent school in New York, recently set out to provide her students with more personalized learning and assessment. In this article, Lusardi documents how she revamped a project with personalization in mind, which resulted in content-rich exploration and greater student engagement. The author's project, called "One Big Thing," required each student to develop a passion or interest related to Chinese culture and using Chinese language and to create a final product that showcased his or her learning. Although Lusardi had assigned the project for several years, in her most recent iteration, she allowed for a longer ideation phase, provided examples for inspiration, personalized her curricular programming, invited feedback from multiple sources, and designed a collaborative evaluation rubric. The end results were high-quality projects that took multiple forms--from an architectural model of a Suzhou garden to a Chinese music video to a cooked meal that included the eight regional Chinese cuisines.
