AbstractMost laboratory activities conducted by students involve measurement, and measurement can only be as precise as the instrument with which it is made. When Julia Metz began her teaching career, she assumed most of the 10th grade chemistry students would have previously used common measuring devices such as metric rulers, graduated cylinders, thermometers, and triple beam balances. Even those experienced with these tools however often do not read the equipment accurately and precisely, so Metz started training students in measurement. Here she describes tips and techniques she uses as she begins this training process with a simple formative assessment involving a standard metric ruler and an index card and moves on to other, more complex measuring devices such a thermometers and graduated cylinders. Once all training is complete, students carry out a summative evaluation in the form of a lab practical to demonstrate their proficiency in using measuring devices. Wearing safety glasses (as always in the lab), students demonstrate proficiency using different measuring devices at each of 12 lab stations. The number of stations and activities can easily be varied according to space or time constraints. (ERIC).
