Abstract | Given complaints about preparation of international students for their writing-intensive courses, a director of first-year writing and an undergraduate researcher at a Midwestern research university conducted a needs assessment based on Kaufman's model. Instruments used included a survey, interviews, and analysis of commentary on sample papers. Findings suggest that there is a growing undergraduate second-language (L2) population, both locally and nationally, yet there continues to be a gap between L1 writing research and L2 writing research; there is also a gap between and among several university writing units. Recommendations include appeals to administrators for more teaching, tutoring, and faculty development resources. To refine the assessment in the future, an alternative needs assessment model, the Logic Model, is described. (As Provided). |
