Abstract | In this article, Kimberly K. Cavanagh and Deborah J. Cohan describe a process they refined for hosting "Gender Benders" at USCB (University of South Carolina Beaufort). Cavanagh and Cohen shared a similar sensibility for thinking about gender, intersectionality, and pedagogical issues and wanted a place standing at the intersection of academic affairs and student life, a place for deepening and extending challenging and intriguing classroom conversations on hot topics while offering something fun and enjoyable. So, they built it, using the adage "If you build it, they will come." And, come the students did. Every month, USCB hosts what is affectionately call a gender party. Voluntary forms allows people to anonymously share their thoughts, offer feedback, and provide suggestions about the topics on the Gender Bender night or series as a whole. The authors hope that by sharing this, others could replicate it with a bit of creativity and limited resources. (ERIC). |
