Abstract | With teacher preparation in the United States under serious scrutiny, there is a growing movement to improve the way teachers are prepared for practice. A key element of that improvement is shifting from instructing candidates about teaching to teaching them how to teach, emphasizing the key activities teachers actually carry out in classrooms and the basic skills essential to new teachers. Teacher preparation providers across the United States are embracing the internship or residency model as a way to hone in on teaching these practices and skills. The author describes innovative practices that teacher preparation programs--both those connected to traditional institutes of higher education and new, alternative programs--are pioneering that involve residencies in schools and that have teacher candidates learn alongside practicing teachers.
