Abstract | Community activities can be an important part of the transition to adulthood, but many students with disabilities miss those experiences because they are not offered in their community or high school. This lack of opportunities in schools may account for the discrepancy that is found after high school graduation between the employment rates of students with disabilities and those without disabilities, This paper will describe five community resources that can be used to help solve this dilemma: service learning, summer employment, community mapping, community-based instruction, and vocational based community instruction. These resources can all be implemented during high school, and are known as transition services, and they help youth with disabilities to make the transition from high school to the adult world.
