Abstract | "Media Clips" appears in every issue of "Mathematics Teacher," offering readers contemporary, authentic applications of quantitative reasoning based on print or electronic media. Based on "In All the Light We Cannot See" (2014), by Anthony Doerr, this article provides a brief trigonometry problem that was solved by the protagonist who is a young German who becomes a soldier. In the novel, the soldier manages to solve the triangle by solving the equation provided here for "d". He is so successful that the Germans produce a fake birth certificate for him, advancing his age by two years. He is sent to the front, where he is a key member of a team locating enemy positions using radio signals. (ERIC). |
