Abstract | As 3D printers become more affordable, schools are using them in increasing numbers. They fit well with the emphasis on product design in technology and engineering education, allowing students to create high-fidelity physical models to see and test different iterations in their product designs. They may also help students to "think in three dimensions." However, a 3D printer in a technology lab is not merely a product prototyper. It can also be a great a tool for experimentation and even for designing a new process. The technology is still so new that there is a lot left to discover. For example, is it possible to 3D print onto a piece of clothing? Presented in this article is an investigation into this question. It was found that yes, it is possible to 3D print on clothing, but some cloth materials may be better choices than others. This article outlines the importance of exploring the capabilities of a 3D printer to increase its uses and reach to other audiences while encouraging technology education students to engineer a process.
