AbstractIliotbial band syndrome (ITBS) is an overuse injury that affects distance runners and produces a large amount of frustration (and pain) to the runner, coaches and trainers. Treatments for ITBS vary widely and no known cures exist. Many running experts and physicians have prescribed several variations of training programs designed to help runners return from a rest and recovery period after experiencing ITBS, but there are few programs generalized for a variety of runners. This article examines the known causative factors of ITBS, such as mileage threshold, running gait and terrain, and incorporates preventive methods such as speed work, gait retraining, shoe type and cross training into a 12-week training program designed to prevent the onset of ITBS. Physical educators, trainers and coaches can use the information presented in this article to help first-time runners train with a reduced risk of developing ITBS or assist in the prevention of re-injury in veteran runners. (As Provided).
