Abstract | The goal of formal education is student learning. By emphasizing experimentation in the classroom or lab, students learn about the results of a particular inquiry. But more importantly, they learn to refine their approach to learning by creating new knowledge rather than merely remembering what they have been told. An inquiry approach where students gain experimentation skills can impact how they learn and their approach to problem solving long after school has ended. A subject area that is fertile with opportunities for implementing experimentation into its curriculum is technology and engineering education, because of its focus on problem- and project-based learning. This article discusses several ways of incorporating experimentation into technology education: teacher-directed experiments, student-selected experimental methods, student-selected and student-found topics, and utilizing an inquiry approach.
