AbstractHow something begins can matter a lot, especially for young adults. "The circumstances under which a person enters a profession is predictive of how that person will view the profession for the rest of his or her life." The goal is for that view to be positive and long lasting for social studies educators. Can more be done to support preservice teachers as they prepare to teach and launch careers in social studies? The authors of this article believe the answer is "Yes!" and that a useful vehicle for doing so is to promote Councils for the Social Studies on college and university campuses across the country. For working educators, there are more that 80 local, state, and regional "affiliate councils" of National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Over the decades, these various Councils for the Social Studies have proven to be valuable to their members and to the profession as a whole. The authors suggest that with some modifications, the council concept could be applied to help answer the needs of prospective social studies teachers. Herein, they identify five main areas where a college Council for the Social Studies (a college CSS) might offer services and activities that are not now offered by traditional teacher preparation programs programs--or could use a boost provided by a collective effort. Next, they provide examples from the Kansas University Council for the Social Studies (KUCSS). They describe how KUCSS worked to: (1) help the pre-service teachers build a variety of professional relationships; (2) address members' career-related needs and interests such as getting a job, developing an interview portfolio, interviewing, and teaching itself; (3) provide the University of Kansas Latin American Studies program with lesson plans; (4) work with school district personnel and education outreach persons from state and national government organizations, make professional presentations, and have educational materials published; and (5) receive valuable assistance from honorary members of KUCSS.
