AbstractData from survey research on intergenerational cultural continuity in Russia shows that there is a growing gap between values and understanding of Russian ethnicity over time as links between generations become weaker. In this article the author asserts that not only should the younger generation learn from the older generation; the older generation, as well, will have to heed young people. Older people's respect for and acceptance of the opinions of the younger generation will require a knowledge of the psychology of young people. The author describes a study of the characteristics of the perceptions held by the younger, parental, and older (grandparents') generations concerning young people. The study was participated in by students at Voronezh State Pedagogical University between the ages of eighteen and twenty (sixty participants), the parents' generation between the ages of forty and fifty-five (fifty-five people), and the grandparents' generation between the ages of sixty and seventy (forty-five people). In addition, the author set apart a group of educators (schoolteachers and college instructors) between the ages of thirty-eight and fifty-five (forty people), both as a possible parental generation and in consideration of the basic, socializing function of pedagogical activity, namely the transmission of sociocultural experience. The author's interpretation of the results shows that a predominant portion of the middle and older generations, and a major percentage of educators, are guided by ordinary common sense in their interaction with young people, while only a very small percentage--mostly educators--actually possess scientific psychological knowledge. The results from the study show there is still a persistent problem of weak generational bonds. This is a serious obstacle to any effective intergenerational dialogue, and is a cause of the inadequate use of the intergenerational potential in the process of young people's socialization. (ERIC).
