Abstract | This article provides a discussion that examines Hawaiian performance cartography as described by Oliveira--but only as it relates to the island of Kaua'i. Section I begins with a chant asking permission to "enter" into the cultural landscape described in "mele" (songs) and "hula" (dance). Section II looks briefly at "mo'oku auhau" (genealogies), "inoa'aina" (place names), "mahele'aina" (land divisions), "oleo no'eau" (proverbs), and "mo'olelo" (historical accounts). Section III looks at "hei" (string figures) as performance cartography. The discussion in each section will provide examples and explanations of Hawaiian performance cartography, which includes a first time look at the cartographic representations of "hei." (ERIC). |
