AbstractAt best, insurance is a crucial investment that leads to peace of mind after large educational technology expenditures. If something goes wrong, the insurer pays the claim. At worst, insurance premiums siphon money from school budgets while lining the pockets of distant company executives. John Connolly, director of technology at Consolidated High School District 230 in Orland Park, Illinois., pondered these scenarios. Faced with the risk of purchasing and maintaining more than 500 Apple iPads, Connolly's answer for District 230 was to say "no" to insurance. He says that the iPad ended up being a very durable device, and he used the money that would have gone toward insurance to pay for additional devices in case of damage. This type of plan however requires an affirmative plan to set aside funds that would have been used to purchase insurance and use them to repair or replace devices as needed. Making this sort of decision means increased responsibility for tech directors across the country, but some feel that the role of insurance may diminish over time as technology tends to get cheaper, not more expensive.
