AbstractIn the elementary grades, the butterfly is a commonly used curricular context for children to learn about growth and development of organisms as they progress through their life cycle. "A Framework for K-12 Science Education's" life science core idea LS1.B, Growth and Development of Organisms, states that by the end of grade 5, students should know that plants and animals have unique and diverse life cycles that include being born (sprouting in plants), growing, developing into adults, reproducing, and eventually dying (NRC 2012, p. 146). The butterfly is an example of an organism with an interesting and unique cycle of birth, growth, and development that can readily be observed in the classroom or studied vicariously through picture books and video. The marvel of watching an adult butterfly emerge from a chrysalis is a never-ending delight for adults and children. Through the use of the probe described in this article, that delight is further enhanced by ensuring that children also develop the understanding and appreciation of how life changes as it transforms within that delicate structure.
