Abstract | Fred Estes is a science teacher and lower school science coordinator at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, California. Carolee Fucigna is a prekindergarten teacher at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, California. Their year in the classroom regularly begins with starting a compost pile that serves as a focus for classroom research and science investigations throughout the year. The compost pile is also an ongoing community project, a link with families, an opportunity for practicing social-emotional learning, and a part of the science curriculum the authors call "Global Stewardship." The activity described in this article is appropriate for grades K-2 and this basic plan can also be scaled for older students. One of the many outcomes of this project has been increased awareness about recycling and compost among students. They become knowledgeable about the composting process and the authors are excited about provoking this emerging awareness of individual and collective responsibility for global stewardship.
