AbstractIT professionals in higher education spend much of their time focusing on demand, resources, and constant change. This article suggests that they need to be investing more time in assessing, advancing, and defining their own careers. The article dispels the myth among IT professionals that the CIO is not a great position and worthy career goal. It advises that, to succeed, CIOs push themselves out of comfort zones and focus on some of the lesser-known aspects of the job application and interview. It describes what college/university senior leaders are looking for in an IT leader, considers such issues as navigating status and risk in higher education, and suggests what will be needed from senior IT leaders in the years ahead.
