AbstractMelissa Hasan believes that Conceptual Physics saved her sanity. A seemingly unimportant metallurgical fact she learned in high school has made parenting her toddler possible on most days. The most important thing she learned in High School from Conceptual Physics, and Interpersonal Relationships was that what is rigid breaks. In high school, she learned that sometimes you have to give a little or lose a lot. She learned how to take a deep breath and change her expectations. She learned that sometimes it is okay to change the rules in the middle of the game, if that is what it takes to keep the game going. Most of all, she learned how to learn from failure. This article discusses how, as a new mother, she must bend or break, and outlines four executive functions that are crucial for gifted individuals to learn at a young age in order to cope with the anxiety and frustration that comes from being an intellectual outsider.
