Abstract | This response by Thomas A. Regelski was solicited to complement the lead article in this issue, "Toward Convergence: Adapting Music Education to Contemporary Society and Participatory Culture" by Evan S. Tobias. The author notes that many interesting and vital questions and alternatives that are often studiously ignored, overlooked, or taken for granted in music education are posed in Tobias' article. They are important whether or not the convergence of traditional and new musics and media are at issue, and they should not be lost in a flurry of dialogue eager to agree with or dismiss the recommendations made. In this article, Regelski offers caveats while at the same time generally supporting the idea of "participatory culture," and he suggests alternatives beyond those stressed in Tobias' article.
