Abstract | The article by Else-Quest and Grabe (2012) is an interesting one that discusses gender equity and indicators of gender equity; the authors push for the use of gender equity measures to help understand women's well-being through these measures' influence on power and empowerment. Else-Quest and Grabe do a good job of explaining that the "political is personal." They examine this point through a feminist framework. Satisfaction of collective needs as well as personal ones is important to well-being. Thus, it should be clear that the personal is political. One cannot separate individuals from their social context. Their article maintains an international framework that is helpful. However, with vast differences in economy, politics, education, income, employment, and so on among nations, it is important to understand how the relationships between these measures of nation-level gender inequity and women's psychological functioning and empowerment differ within various nations.
