AbstractThe author discusses five novels with characters on the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and integrates her readings with her brothers' experiences with autism and Asperger's syndrome. Diverse in scope and approach, each of the books surveyed offers unique insights on facets of the autistic perspective. Lord's "Rules," Stork's "Marcelo in the Real World," and Erskine's "Mockingbird" are most reflective of the author's personal experience with ASD. Teachers seeking to educate students about a particular student's manifestation of ASD may find Haddon's "Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" or Baskin's "Anything but Typical" better suited to their needs. Whether taught singly or as a unit, these young adult novels are excellent tools for promoting understanding of ASD. (Contains 2 notes.) (ERIC).
