AbstractIn the authors' science classrooms, students respond favorably and with more enthusiasm when they engage them with doing activities and building their own connections, as opposed to simply listening to or reading about the important concepts. Creative activities are important in science classrooms because creativity is not only an integral component for knowledge construction but also can make instruction more effective. The authors' own experience demonstrated that creative classroom investigations inspire students and promote effective learning environments. In an attempt to integrate a geological component in a classroom investigation of biological evolution, the authors developed two activities with an interdisciplinary approach that includes the role of the environment. Their activities not only offer alternatives for addressing the mechanism of natural selection, but they also have been affirmed by their students as their classroom favorites. The authors like to think that they "evolved through their students' natural selection processes." (Contains 3 figures.) (ERIC).
