AbstractThe purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to research Illinois K-5 leadership skills using the research-based paradigm created by the School Leader Collaborative to determine which, if any, self-reported strengths were more impactful from principals' and superintendents' perspectives. The focus included the paradigm's three leadership intelligences, 12 competencies, and 48 attributes. Quantitative data were received from a survey sent to all K-5 principals and their superintendents who maintained a commendable or exemplary school rating for the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 school years. The findings of this study suggested certain competencies, attributes, and an intelligence area reported higher strengths from different subcategories. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in this study to examine the level of strengths for each of the 48 attributes from the perspective of principals of commendable schools, principals of exemplary schools, superintendents of principals of commendable schools, and superintendents of principals of exemplary schools. The findings suggested there were specific attributes and competencies reported with higher levels of strength than others. More specifically, principals reported highest strengths in the competency of service and growth mindset, and attributes of "trustworthy," "collaborative," "ethical," "responsible," and "humble." Superintendents reported highest strengths in the competencies of service and community building and attributes of "ethical," "organized," "trustworthy," and "responsible." Recommendations include focusing on key attributes and competencies when developing preservice programs, mentoring, and professional development programs. The study's results can provide principal preparation programs, state principal organizations, superintendents, and school leaders insights into professional development.
