AbstractThere are widespread concerns about disparities in educational attainment in the United States. Unfortunately African American, Hispanic, Native American, and low-income Broward County Public Schools high school students participate in College Bound Type Programs at lower rates than students of other races and ethnicities. Many of these students are missing out on the significant advantages associated with college pathway programs such as higher post-secondary enrollment, persistence, and graduation rates. This quantitative outcomes study examined the associations with post-secondary enrollment of participating in College Bound Type Programs for Black and Hispanic Broward County Public Schools students who attended high schools in low-income communities. 3,620 students who entered ninth grade in 2013 were studied through graduation. Univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression analysis were utilized. Participation in College Bound Type Programs were found to be positively associated with post-secondary enrollment and 4-year college post-secondary enrollment respectively. These results highlight the positive outcomes associated with College Bound Type Program participation for this population. Policy makers and educators are urged to work together to start preparing parents and students as early as elementary school in preparation for College Bound Type Programs in high school.
