Abstract | This exploratory research study analyzed the relationships between attitude, preference, and achievement of English Language Learner (ELL) students in high school from Brazil. The study presented what relationships exist between attitude, preference and achievement in reading for both L1 Portuguese, and L2 English. The Middle and Secondary Reading Attitude Survey (MSRAS, 1980) determined the attitude students have towards reading in both Portuguese and English. The Demographic Questionnaire quantified the Brazilian ELL student population and recorded their preference in reading. The results from the Reading section of Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State (ACCESS) for English Language Learners test determined the achievement of the students in English proficiency. The correlational analysis used SPSS to show the nature of positive, negative, or neutral relationships between attitude, preference and achievement in reading Portuguese and English for high school aged ELLs from Brazil.
