AbstractWhile college was once just for a few people, college access has increased. More students are attending college than ever before, but access does not correlate with degree persistence. Many prospective students cannot attend college due to the increasing cost of tuition. Affordability is a risk to all students, but it is especially difficult for first-generation students. Improving assistance and support for First-Generation College Students (FGCS) is critical to ensuring that these students can progress successfully through college. This study evaluated the utilization, awareness, and effectiveness of on-campus support services in improving student success and student persistence for FGCS in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. The researcher utilized surveys, a focus group, and interviews to obtain information and data. This dissertation evaluated recent research on first-generation college students, the factors that affect their access to and success in college, and the on-campus resources available to assist FGCS and improve success throughout college. The study results yielded recommendations for the university to improve their dissemination of information regarding campus resources and applaud them on the steps they are already taking to assist their FGCS. Overall, FGCS from the EOF program was familiar with the campus resources and felt as though their membership in the program was beneficial to their college experience, both socially and academically. Furthermore, the students felt as though the EOF program provided a welcoming environment filled with support and encouragement.
