Abstract | This qualitative study investigated the concept of teacher coaching in a suburban Midwestern school district. Using case study methodology, the researcher sought to better understand what the term "teacher coaching" means, why more teachers do not engage in teacher coaching opportunities, and what the necessary conditions are for teachers to seek out coaching. In addition to discovering answers to these questions, the goal of the researcher was to further the collective efforts of many educators to effectively support practicing teachers, through coaching, to ultimately improve student performance outcomes. This exploratory case study examined the perceptions of teachers, teacher coaches, and administrators within a Midwestern school district. A survey, a collection of artifacts, several one-on-one interviews, and a focus group comprised the data corpus analyzed. Through the iterative process of data analysis, codes were assigned and themes emerged. Four major themes emerged from this study. These include: "Support" by any other name . . . ; Relationships are at the heart of teacher coaching; Teacher coaching is resource dependent; and Teacher coaching and evaluation may be mutually exclusive. The findings of this study allowed the researcher to share with the leaders of the focus district (and others) ideas for possible future study, as well as suggestions for things to embrace and possibly avoid when attempting to create an environment in which teacher coaching is utilized to professionally develop staff and improve their effectiveness, so that student performance ultimately improves.
