AbstractTeacher and administrator turnover continues to be an ongoing problem in American public schools. This is especially true for public charter schools, which experience significantly more turnover and attrition than traditional public schools. This study aimed to reveal how the experiences of former charter school teachers and administrators may have led to their decision to leave charter schools. The sample consisted of 15 former charter school teachers and 7 former charter school administrators. The study also examined if educational background and professional development had any impact on teachers' or administrators' desire to leave. Additionally, this study examined if the type of management organization impacted teachers' and administrators' experiences and turnover. The study was qualitative, drawing on interviews of the participants. The study found that while most of the participants overwhelmingly stated that their experiences were negative, primarily those who worked at charter schools led by charter management organizations (CMO), participants who worked at independently operated charter schools did not share the same negative experiences. Furthermore, there was no correlation between educational background or instructional experience of the participants and their decisions to leave. Further implications of the results are discussed.
