AbstractThe COVID-19 Pandemic that hit the world in the 2019-2020 school year impacted school systems just as it did everything else. School districts had to shift the way instruction was delivered as most districts closed their doors due to the orders of the governor in the spring of 2020. Fear of the Coronavirus and the unknown of its potential to spread led school districts to act in the name of safety for their students. Students were affected as they had to learn remotely since they were not permitted to attend their schools for in-person learning. Students with disabilities faced additional challenges based on their individual needs as a remote learning environment was difficult or not possible for some. However, school districts had to overcome this challenge and meet the needs of all students within the district. Students with disabilities by law are guaranteed a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to learn and understand the ways school districts reacted to the school closures and hear about their experiences in meeting the needs of students with disabilities. The participants (N = 16) in this study were special education teachers, principals, and special education directors at six different school districts. Data were collected through interviews with the participants and district document analysis. The researcher transcribed the interviews and organized the data based on themes which emerged from the interviews and the review of district documents relating to the school closures. The themes were organized to relate to the research questions. The study found that school districts had the same intentions for their students with disabilities but varied in their methods to meet the needs of students with disabilities. The participants shared the benefits and challenges they faced when trying to educate students with disabilities during the school closures.
