AbstractThe purpose of this quantitative, comparative study was to identify statistical differences that may have existed between adult basic education students in traditional and blended classrooms on the variables of perceptions of self-efficacy and academic performance. The seminal theories underpinning the research were andragogy, heutagogy, and the Self-Efficacy Theory. Two research questions informed the research to determine whether blended learning environments were associated with higher perceptions of self-efficacy and better academic performance than did traditional learning environments. The minimum sample size of 128 subjects, as determined by GPower, comprised the sample in one Southern state with 64 learners from each of the learning groups in the independent variable. An Independent Samples "t-test" was used to analyze the self-efficacy data (p = 0.473, d = 0.095; the observed statistical power was 0.08. ANCOVA was run to analyze the data on academic performance while controlling for the covariate of academic pretest scores (p = 0.380, [eta-squared] = 0.023); the observed statistical power was 0.06. Analyses failed to reject the null hypotheses for each research question. This research failed to identify significant differences between the two learning groups.
