AbstractFirst-generation students, especially in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, have low persistence rates. Research shows that one of the barriers to their low persistence is a need for a student-centered pedagogical approach. Research has shown that if an instructor incorporates a pause technique during a standard lecture, students have a deeper understanding of concepts and higher levels of learning and engagement (Bachhel et al. 2014). The purpose of this program evaluation was to explore the benefits of using pause techniques in STEM lectures at a community college. Quantitative and qualitative data from student surveys and faculty interviews were collected and analyzed from eight courses taught in the summer of 2022. Three instructors who taught similar courses in the summer of 2021 also provided the final exam scores to compare student performance. Both faculty and students considered pause techniques an effective approach to incorporate into the lectures. Students and faculty believed that pause techniques increased their understanding of content, encouraged peer interaction, promoted active classroom engagement, and allowed students to reflect on their prior learning. The results also showed that the students in one of the courses with pause techniques performed significantly better than the students in a similar section without pause techniques. Resources for practitioners who wish to implement pause techniques and directions for future program evaluators have been shared.
