AbstractThere are equity gaps in dual enrollment registration. Literature demonstrates that White and Asian students register for dual enrollment at higher rates than Black and Latinx students. Many students and parents are not aware of dual enrollment opportunities, nor do they fully understand the proven benefits such as saving time, money, and preparing for a smooth transition to college. Targeted video messages can help inform students from historically marginalized populations and their parents about dual enrollment opportunities and benefits. Research has shown that messages that are inclusive and meet the needs of target audiences have the most promise. I conducted a quasi-experimental static-group comparison study to explore Black and Latinx dual enrollment student registration before and after implementing a targeted video message. The study was conducted with participation from 14 partner high schools. Fall 2021 dual enrollment registration (before implementing the video message) was compared with Fall 2022 dual enrollment registration (after implementing the video message) and data were disaggregated by race. I conducted a second quasi-experimental static-group comparison with random assignment of partner high schools into one of two conditions to determine if including parents or guardians in messaging made a difference in registration by race. Partner high schools were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: (a) students received the targeted video message via high school email or (b) students received the targeted video message via high school email and parents or guardians received the video via email on file with the high school. Key findings showed that dual enrollment registration increased after implementing the targeted video message for White, Asian, and Hispanic students but not for Black students. When comparing dual enrollment registration for students who received a video message with students whose parents or guardians also received the message, overall registration rates were higher when both students and their parents or guardians received the video message. When these data were disaggregated by race, results indicated that only Asian students whose parents or guardians received the video message were more likely to register for dual enrollment. White and Hispanic students had higher registration rates only when students received the email with the video message. No effect was observed for Black students. Potential explanations for these findings and implications for practitioners are provided. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
