AbstractThe purpose of this Action Research study was to explore best practices in progressive school design and understand how a documentary and community panel event on the creation of such schools can create grassroots change. Cycle 1 data collection included interviews with eight individuals who were teachers, administrators, and caregivers to school-age children. Findings and themes from Cycle 1 were used to design the Action Steps carried out in Cycle 2. Cycle 2 Action Steps included the creation of a 41-minute documentary on progressive schooling. Stakeholders participated in a film screening event and live panel discussion and were later surveyed and interviewed about their experiences with the film and panel discussion. The film was also made available online, and participants who viewed the film online were surveyed and interviewed. In total, forty-six surveys were collected and fifteen individuals were interviewed using both individual interviews and focus group interviews. The goal of the Cycle 2 Action Step was to determine to what extent a documentary detailing best-practices for student-centered schooling models can inform stakeholders, change stakeholder thinking, create connections between stakeholders, and encourage stakeholders to become more active in the creation of new progressive public schools. The study concluded that the documentary and live screening event was an extremely valuable method for informing stakeholders about progressive schooling and compelling them to take action. The findings indicate that film, especially when paired with live discussion, provides an effective medium for informing educators, community members, and caregivers to school-age children about progressive schooling models in public K-12 education.
