AbstractDespite national efforts to reduce racial and ethnic inequalities within the United States workforce, the veterinarian profession ranks as one of the least diverse industries. There is a gap in the literature regarding the perceptions of ethnic minorities employed in the United States veterinarian industry concerning this lack of diversity and the roles professional development and minority leadership may play in increasing diversity. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe the perceptions of ethnic minorities employed in the veterinarian industry in the United States regarding these issues. Participants were ten adult ethnic minorities who were employees of a large veterinarian organization within the United States. Data was collected via semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed through thematic analysis. Themes that emerged revealed the participants perceive a lack of diversity in the veterinarian industry, similar to what has been reported in the literature. They also indicated that the veterinarian industry welcomes diversity, but some minority groups lack the education or training to enter the industry. Themes that emerged regarding the participants' perceptions of the roles they may play in increasing diversity revealed beliefs that leaders should seek professional advancement through education and training, influence ethnic minorities to enter and advance in the industry and remove barriers to entry and advancement. Themes that emerged regarding the participants' perceptions of the role(s) professional development may play in increasing leadership diversity revealed that professional development provides networking opportunities and qualifies ethnic minorities for leadership positions. Regarding the participants' perceptions of the strategies veterinarian organizations currently use to increase ethnic minority leadership, participants indicated that veterinarian organizations must create positive environments that nurture diversity, and veterinarian organizations must formalize processes to increase ethnic minority leadership representation. Implications of the results for practice included engagement to promote and introduce ethnic minorities to the industry; implementation of strategies to recruit and retain ethnic minorities; and professional development pathways to move toward leadership. Further research is recommended on perceptions of ethnic minority students regarding diversity within post-secondary education, skills ethnic minorities within the veterinarian industry possess, and how they use these skills to enter the workforce.
