AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine the impact on the leadership style of high school administrators as they navigated the move to distance learning due to school closures because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study results are based on interviews with four school administrators, lead counselor, and one teacher leader. The data was further supported by a survey of teachers and publicly available school artifacts, such as WASC self-reports, to provide triangulation of findings. The theoretical framework for this study focused through a sociocultural lens. Education does not occur in a vacuum, but rather because of the interaction of two or more individuals sharing thoughts and ideas. This social component requires that a relationship must exist for the transfer of knowledge. The school itself provides the structural organization, the culture, that identifies how the individuals are expected to work together. On March 13, 2020, the study site shut its physical doors to students so that on March 16, 2020, it could open its virtual school environment. This study found that school administrators changed the focus of their leadership style from data-driven student achievement to one around meeting the social-emotional needs of stakeholders. This was necessitated by the large amount of time being devoted to addressing county, state, and federal requirements around COVID-19. In the virtual setting, school culture was impacted by the lack of relationship building so little ability to utilize distributed leadership existed. As the architect for school reform, the role of the principal is to develop the culture of the school by focusing on relationship building, the basis for distributed leadership.
