AbstractThe purpose of this study was to create a theory about how college students cope with stress. This study used classic grounded theory to develop the theory of discovering adulthood, which is grounded in the data. Classic grounded theory was chosen because it allows the subject matter to be approached without preconception. The nature of classic grounded theory is such that it does not shape or lead the study, but instead allows the emerging concepts from the data to guide the study and eventual theory. This methodology is important for this study so that the full scope of the topic can be investigated. The theory of discovering adulthood discusses how college students discover adulthood through settling into their identity, developing independence, and coping. Discovering adulthood is learned through experimentation, identifying what is most successful for the individual and what provides the necessary support and success in their life. This theory, and information contained, may be helpful in helping young adults transition into adulthood through experimentation and autonomy. Applications for this information may be helpful for students and those supporting young adults, such as family, friends, and college support departments. Suggestions for future research include further investigation of any of the main topics of this theory, as well as other populations of young adults that do not directly transition to college.
