AbstractThe purpose of this teacher-practitioner research study was to examine how elementary teacher candidates engaged in sensemaking about the learning process within the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and to further examine how they engaged in sensemaking about NGSS teaching and curriculum development. Interviews and course artifacts from 14 participants in an elementary science methods course were analyzed to answer the research questions. Open coding (Saldana, 2016) was used to identify the major topical ideas, and focused coding revealed patterns and relationships which formed the basis of the analysis. Findings revealed that authentic science learning experiences during the methods course were found to be particularly meaningful in candidates' sensemaking about the NGSS learning process, and that there were six essential elements of authentic science learning experiences in elementary science methods courses related to these findings. Candidates were able to identify an ideal science lesson related to NGSS, but conflicts arose when candidates were asked to translate this into actual instructional and curriculum choices.
