AbstractThis dissertation was designed to foster a deeper understanding of population invariance in the context of composite-score equating and provide practitioners with guidelines for addressing score equity concerns at the composite score level. The purpose of this dissertation was threefold. The first was to compare different composite equating procedures in their ability to preserve population invariance under the random groups design. The second was to evaluate how well different composite equating procedures preserve population invariance when test forms are not parallel in content, difficulty, or reliability. The third purpose was to investigate the impact of differential dimensionality on population invariance for various composite equating procedures. A total of ten composite equating procedures across three types of equating methods (equipercentile, IRT true-score, and IRT observed-score) and three variations of composite equating frameworks (composite-to-composite equating, separate equating then scoring, and separate equating then combining) were examined and evaluated through three studies using different data types in this dissertation. Results indicated that when test forms were very similar in content, difficulty, and reliability, and had very similar dimensionality structures across forms/subpopulations, population invariance of equating would not be compromised, regardless of which composite equating procedure was used. However, when test forms were not strictly parallel, the performance of the equating procedures with respect to population invariance varied slightly depending on which equating method was used, which composite equating framework was chosen, degree of dimensionality, and test and sample characteristics.
