AbstractThe purpose of this narrative qualitative dissertation was to develop an understanding of how radiographers perceive the value of continuing education as well as the process of earning continuing education credits and its role in their practice. To achieve this purpose, seven participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol. Responses to interview questions were viewed through Fink's Significant Learning Experiences taxonomy to answer these research questions: What factors are most important in the decision-making process of clinical radiographers and radiography educators as they select opportunities for mandatory continuing education? How much, and in what ways, are continuing education activities valued by clinical radiographers and radiography educators? What specific factors may make the continuing education program more valuable to clinical radiographers and radiography educators? The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using general inductive analysis, and coded. Findings indicated that radiographers generally do not value continuing education or the process of obtaining it. Continuing education is generally not transferrable to the workplace due to the highly theoretical nature of most continuing education activities. Participants referenced the ease in cheating on continuing education activities and the "useless" nature of continuing education as well as highlighting the participant recommendations that 25-50% of the continuing education credits should be earned in person and not through directed readings. These findings highlight the need for a restructuring of the continuing education process if the activity is to provide value to radiographers. Suggestions for restructuring continuing education included allowing experiential learning, software used in clinical applications, and simulations.
