AbstractThe purpose of this quasi-experimental, quantitative study was to determine if there was a difference in student growth, in students in grades seven and eight in reading and math, based on their placement in advanced or general education courses. This study was conducted in a diverse, suburban junior high school which served four different communities. The control group for this study consisted of seventh and eighth grade students enrolled during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years in general education courses that have a standard-aged score of 113 or higher on the CogAT assessment. The experimental group consisted of seventh and eighth grade students enrolled during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years in advanced courses in reading and math regardless of their standard-aged score on the CogAT. Data collected to measure student growth included results in reading and math on the NWEA MAP assessment. The reading and math NWEA MAP growth scores for students in grades seven and eight, from the district studied, demonstrated growth scores which showed no statistically significant differences in terms of students who were placed into advanced courses and those who were placed in general education courses.
