Abstract | Colleges and universities recruit student veterans and spend $10.2 billion a year on GI Bill benefits; however, student veterans rarely receive degrees. This descriptive research study explored the experiences of student veterans during their transition from the military to higher education institutions. A qualitative descriptive approach was selected to understand the personal nature of the veterans' transitions and to understand the challenges student veterans encounter as they transition into higher education. The focus was also to identify strategies that could be implemented to improve the reentry experiences of veterans into higher education. The target population included 13 student veterans between the ages of 25 and 55, with prior active-duty service experience, who reentered college after military separation. Data were collected using e-mail surveys. The research questions were (a) What are the experiences of veterans reentering into college within the United States? (b) What strategies can be implemented to improve the reentry experiences of veterans within the United States? Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used to guide the data analysis process for this qualitative descriptive study. This research study addressed student veteran perceptions of the challenges they encounter as they transition into higher education, and it identified strategies that support the transition process. The finding was that universities' lack of social and academic support placed student veterans at greater risk of academic failure. Further, system and support structures were identified in this study, and other research studies, as crucial to supporting a smooth transition from military to higher education.
